Organic Gardening Has Never Been This Easy!

There is much more to horticulture than just having something pretty to look at. They are not only a simple hobby either. It plays a significant part in a gardener’s life by bringing calmness, accomplishment and a connection to nature. Once you become skilled at horticulture, the aftermath from it will be totally worth it.

Clay soil can be a real pain to work with as it often sticks to the end of the shovel. To make your digging project easier, apply a coat of automobile wax to your shovel first and then buff it lightly. The clay will no longer stick to the shovel, and this also helps to prevent other problems like rusting.

Digging in hard clay soil is made even more difficult because it sticks to the shovel. One way to get around this problem is to coat the shovel with wax. Use a clean cloth to spread the wax evenly. The shovel will glide through the clay and as a bonus, your shovel will be resistant to rust.

Choose perennials that slugs are not attracted to. A particularly vulnerable plant can be killed by snails and slugs overnight. Young plants with smooth and tender leaves are their favorite. Some perennials, however, leave a bad taste in slugs’ mouths or are difficult to chew through because their leaves aren’t tender. Excellent varieties include heuchera, achillea, euphorbia, campanula, and helleborus.

Soak seeds overnight, preferably in a cool, dark place. Simply place a handful of seeds in a container, cover the seeds up with water, and stash it away. This will hydrate your seeds and it will cause them to grow faster. This increases the chances of survival for the seeds.

If you want to keep your garden free of pests, start with healthy soil! The healthier the plants you grow, the more resistant they’ll be to illness, fungus, or bugs. If you start with balanced soil, your garden will produce healthy plants with the best yield. Refrain from using chemicals since these will increase the salt content of the soil.

For weeds that aren’t in the middle of your plants, use boiling water to kill their roots. Boiling water is an excellent, organic substance for use against weeds. Just pour boiling water directly on top of the weeds cautiously to avoid damaging your plants. This can cause enough damage to the roots of any plant to kill it.

Make sure to fertilize your garden. Composted manure is effective in raising healthy plants, and commercial fertilizer products are safer and more convenient. There are many fertilization methods out there; the type is not quite as important as actually using something.

During winter, you should take your favorite plants inside. You can save the ones you spent the most money on or the ones that are resistant. Dig around roots carefully before transferring to a pot.

There are natural steps you can take to keep garden pests at bay. Slugs stay away from marigolds and onions when they are planted in a garden. Using wood ash as mulch around the base of trees and shrub seedlings will also help keep away insect pests. With these natural methods, there is no need to purchase expensive, harsh pesticides.

If you plan on growing peas, you should consider starting them indoors instead of beginning them outside. Pea seeds germinate better indoors. It will create heartier seedlings, which means they will more easily resist the pests and diseases they will encounter in an outdoor environment. Once they grow a bit bigger, the seedlings can be easily transplanted to an outdoor garden.

Soil needs to be rich in certain nutrients to grow healthy plants. You may need to alter the kind of soil you use based on the types of plants you intend to grow. For special requirements, you can build separate areas with soil that is right for certain plants.

If you are a first time gardener, it is important that you follow all of the instructions on all of your tools and chemicals. You might end up damaging your plants or getting a skin irritation. Keep your body safe and follow directions.

Broad-spectrum pesticides are really not the optimal choice for pest control in your garden. These pesticides can kill the useful insects that work as predators to pests. Bugs that are good for your garden tend to be more susceptible to these types of pesticides, and using them could mean an increase in the pests you are actually trying to get rid of. As a result, gardeners often have to resort to using more toxic pesticides to get rid of garden pests.

Make a landscaping plan before you dig your first hole. Use this to remind you where certain things were planted, later when they start sprouting. You can also prevent yourself from losing small plants within a large garden.

In the hottest time of the day, most vegetables are less firm; even the act of harvesting the veggies may cause bruising. When you remove the produce from the plant, use shears or a knife to cut them from the vine without twisting, as this can damage the plant.

Heather can be planted to attract useful insects. Heather is great for getting bees to stop by at the beginning of spring, as heather plants have nectar available early in the season. Beds of heather are largely undisturbed and make a perfect living space for spiders, beetles and a variety of other beneficial tenants. Protect yourself from being surprised by these bugs by donning horticulture gloves before disturbing your heather beds.

It is a good idea to invest in a good pair of knee pads, made specifically for gardening. They can be very helpful when working close to the ground on low-growth plants. Spending lots of time on your knees while gardening can injure them and create lasting pain. Purchase a great pair of knee pads; they will provide a cushion for your knees while making gardening more comfortable.

Pine Needles

Pine needles should not be overlooked as a great source for mulch. Certain plants are acidic, and thrive in acidic soil. For such plants, pine needles function both as a handy mulch and as a soil amendment to lower the pH. Cover your beds with two inches of needles; acid will be dispersed into the soil as they decompose.

If you want a strange, yet successful, green answer to getting rid of weeds, boil them to death. Boiling water is an excellent, organic substance for use against weeds. Pour hot water right on the weeds, but do not get any on your plants. Boiling water can hurt the roots of weeds and can prevent them from growing.

When planting seeds in containers, plant the seed roughly three times deeper than the seed’s size. It is important to note though, that not all seeds are covered to this depth, as some need direct sunlight to grow properly. This is true of popular flowers like petunias and zinnias. With so many different types of seeds, it is important that you check seed packaging or utilize other resources, such as the Internet, to discover which seeds require exposure to direct sunlight.

Pest control is very difficult if you are dealing with your veggie garden. You can’t use chemicals as they’re the last thing you want to be eating when you enjoy the fruits of your labor. Persistence and care is a much better solution for pest control, but many avoid it because it actually requires some work on their behalf. If you catch them when there are only a few around, you can actually pick them off the plants by hand.
